Roma situation in Republic of Moldova vs. Europe |

On 7 October 2011 the Roma National Centre, Moldova together with Faculty of Psychology and Social Assistance of International University of Moldova, organized a Public Debate Club between Roma and non-roma students, from different high universities from Chisinau. Debate Club has the topic of “Roma situation in Republic of Moldova vs. Europe”, being facilitated by Gheorghe Zugravu and Igor Stoica from Amnesty International Moldova.
“We should not let extremism take over Europe” – mentioned Igor Stoica from Amnesty International Moldova, referring to recent developments of the extremist groups towards Roma in Hungary, Czech Republic and more recently to what happened in Bulgaria. “Europe is a home for everybody and we (Roma) have a right for it and not scapegoated for failure of state policies” – said Nicolae RADITA from Roma National Center.
Roma people continue to be on the margins of society and live in segregated communities, Romani children placed in special schools, Roma families evicted from their homes, high level of unemployment among Roma, lack of IDs being one the biggest minority group in Europe. Many Roma and non-Roma stood up on the 1st of October in many European cities and Moldovan Roma civil society is allying to the Roma Pride March with slogans such as:“Enough!”, “Stop!” to its racist attitude towards Roma.
The club debate is one of a series organized under the project “Institutional support” offered to Roma National Center by Open Society Foundations Budapest (Roma Initiatives Office) and voluntary contribution from International Free University Moldova.
